John D. Sonnenberg, MD
Orthopedic Surgeon & Medical Consultant
Dr. Sonnenberg is a board certified orthopedic surgeon and fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. He trained in general orthopedics and specialized in shoulder and hand surgery. He practiced orthopedics for 35 years in Chicago and has recently relocated to the Salt Lake Valley.
After graduating from Brigham Young University, Dr. Sonnenberg attended medical school in Chicago at the University of Illinois as an Edmund James Independent Scholar. He was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society while at the U of I. He completed his orthopedic residency at the University of Pittsburgh mentoring under the legendary Dr. Albert B. Ferguson. Dr. Sonnenberg received specialty hand surgery training in the University of California system.
In addition to his orthopedic work, Dr. Sonnenberg served as a combat surgeon for the US Army. He completed tours of duty in both Afghanistan and Iraq and was retired from the service with the rank of Lt Colonel. Dr. Sonnenberg earned his Combat Medic Badge for service under fire. This is one of his most cherished distinctions.
In his spare time Dr. Sonnenberg enjoys playing ice hockey. He also enjoys opera and theater with his wife Theresa, and spending time with their nine children and fifteen (and counting) grandchildren, most of whom live in the Salt Lake area. Dr. Sonnenberg frequently travels to Hawaii and has made a hobby teaching about Astronomy.
